Brinjal

Known as baingan or eggplant, with fruit shape and colour chosen for each regional market.

Illustration

Brinjal markets are strongly regional: round or long, purple or green, striped or plain. Hybrids are bred to match those preferences while adding a longer bearing period, glossy fruit that holds its colour, and tolerance to the shoot and fruit borer.

Growing notes

Nursery-raised and transplanted, brinjal is a long-duration crop that bears for many weeks. It does well in warm conditions with regular irrigation and benefits from pruning of older leaves to keep the canopy open.

  • Transplant at 30–35 days
  • Harvest when fruit is glossy and firm
  • Remove damaged shoots promptly
