The research programme exists to put useful traits into seed: yield, uniformity, fruit quality, and tolerance to the pests and diseases that cost growers the most.
Breeding
Each crop programme maintains a collection of parent lines and evaluates new crosses every season. Promising hybrids go into replicated trials where they are compared with the varieties growers already use, under ordinary farm conditions rather than ideal ones.
Trials
Multi-location trials follow, across the regions and seasons a variety is intended for. A hybrid that wins in one district and loses in the next is not released. Trial data — plant stand, days to harvest, yield, fruit grade — is recorded for every entry.
Release
A hybrid is released only when it has performed consistently across seasons and sites. Its production is then scaled up, and dealers are briefed on how it should be grown.
