Cucurbits

Cucumber

A quick vine crop for salads and fresh markets, grown in the open and under cover.

Illustration

Cucumber is grown in the open field and, increasingly, under polyhouse cover. Hybrids are bred for straight, uniform, dark green fruit with a small seed cavity, for vines that set fruit early and often, and for tolerance to downy and powdery mildew.

Growing notes

Direct-sown on raised beds or ridges. Vines may be trained on a trellis for straighter fruit and easier picking. Harvest begins around six weeks after sowing and continues as long as the vine is picked regularly.

  • Sow on raised beds with drip irrigation where possible
  • Trellis for straight, clean fruit
  • Pick every 2 days at market size
