Okra

A warm-season crop picked young and tender, grown through summer and the monsoon.

Illustration

Okra is a fast crop: direct-sown, quick to flower, and picked every other day once bearing begins. Hybrids are bred for dark green, five-ridged pods that stay tender, for upright plants that are easy to pick, and for tolerance to yellow vein mosaic.

Growing notes

Sow directly into warm soil in the summer or at the start of the monsoon. Pods are harvested at 6–8 cm, before they turn fibrous. Regular picking keeps the plant producing.

  • Direct sow, 2–3 seeds per hill
  • Pick pods every 2–3 days
  • Keep the field weed-free in the first month
